Miwa Totani

The founder of Maisha Foundation ITEN

Originally from Tokyo, Miwa began her international journey at age 24 when she was seconded to the UK for work. Since then, she has lived across diverse cultures—including several years in Kenya, where her son was born. Her daughter was later born in Romania.

Her close connection to Kenya comes through her husband, a passionate ultra-trail runner, and the meaningful years they spent there as a family. Having witnessed both privilege and hardship among children around the world, Miwa was inspired to create a platform that supports talented but financially challenged young athletes in Iten, Kenya through access to schooling, mentorship, and athletic training.

While she is not a runner herself, Miwa is an enthusiastic supporter of long-distance running and regularly assists her husband during international races. One day, she also dreams of bringing Japanese runners, young and old, to Iten—not only to experience its unique running culture, but to connect with Iten community to foster meaningful cross-cultural exchange.
